Sobrecarga de los cuidadores de pacientes adultos mayores con accidente cerebrovascular

Resumen

Introducción: Los cuidadores informales de pacientes con accidente cerebrovascular experimentan frecuentemente sobrecarga física, emocional y social, lo que afecta su calidad de vida. La escala de Zarit es un instrumento ampliamente utilizado para medir este fenómeno.

Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un estudio observacional transversal retrospectivo en el Hospital Geriátrico "Dr. Gerardo Boungermini" (Asunción, Paraguay) entre noviembre de 2018 y enero de 2019. Se incluyeron 45 cuidadores de pacientes con secuelas de accidente cerebrovascular, seleccionados mediante muestreo no probabilístico voluntario. Se midió el nivel de sobrecarga mediante la escala de Zarit validada al español y se evaluó su asociación con variables sociodemográficas.

Resultados: La edad media de los cuidadores fue de 42 años, con predominio de mujeres (80%), casados (60%) y con educación secundaria (62%). El 56% no tenía parentesco directo con el paciente. El 71% experimentó sobrecarga intensa, el 27% sobrecarga ligera y solo el 2% no reportó sobrecarga. La edad, el estado civil y el grado de parentesco se asociaron significativamente con la sobrecarga. Cuidadores de mayor edad y casados presentaron mayor sobrecarga. Los cuidadores sin parentesco, hijos biológicos e hijos políticos mostraron niveles de sobrecarga significativamente más altos que esposos, sobrinos y nietos (P=0,0007).

Conclusiones: Más del 70% de los cuidadores presentó sobrecarga intensa. Estos resultados podrían contribuir al diseño de estrategias de educación y apoyo para minimizar la sobrecarga y mejorar la calidad de vida de los cuidadores.
