Introduction: Kinesiophobia—excessive or irrational fear of movement due to fear of pain or reinjury—and pain catastrophizing—a pattern of anticipatory negative thinking about pain—are cognitive-behavioral factors that may interact harmfully in older adults, reducing functional capacity and quality of life. The aim was to determine the level of kinesiophobia and pain catastrophizing among older adults from Asunción and Central Department, Paraguay, during 2023.
Materials and methods: Descriptive, non-experimental, cross-sectional, prospective quantitative study. Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK-11) and Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), Spanish validated versions, in 30 older adults (intentional non-probability sampling).
Results: Female 45%, male 55%; mean age 71.3 years (SD 8.32); most represented age group 60–72 years (47%). Elevated kinesiophobia in both sexes (86% women, 81% men). High catastrophizing: 64% in women versus 12% in men.
Conclusions: Elevated kinesiophobia in both sexes; catastrophizing considerably more frequent in women. Systematic assessment of both constructs in kinesiology practice with older adults is supported.
