Author Guidelines

General requirements

The Revista UniNorte de Medicina y Ciencias de la Salud, of the Universidad del Norte (Paraguay), accepts original, unpublished manuscripts in the health sciences and related fields. Submission implies that the work has not been published previously, is not under simultaneous consideration elsewhere, and has been approved by all authors. Scientific quality, methodological rigour, integrity and ethics are entry requirements.

Per-typology limits and reporting guidelines appear once in each section below on this page, next to the submission link.

Language

The journal accepts manuscripts in Spanish, Portuguese, and English. All submissions must include title, abstract, and keywords in the manuscript’s original language and in English. When the manuscript is written in English, title, abstract, and keywords in Spanish are also recommended.

Originality and exclusivity

Submitted manuscripts must be original and unpublished, and must not be under review at another journal. The journal does not accept plagiarism, self-plagiarism, data manipulation, redundant publication, or unjustified fragmentation of results. All manuscripts may be screened with similarity-detection tools; works that fail originality and integrity criteria may be rejected.

General manuscript structure

Manuscripts should include, as applicable:

  • A clear, precise title that represents the content
  • Abstract in Spanish and English
  • Keywords in Spanish and English
  • Introduction
  • Methods or methodological development
  • Results, where applicable
  • Discussion
  • Conclusions
  • Ethics statements
  • References
  • Tables, figures, or supplementary material, where applicable

Original articles must present a structured abstract including at least: objective, methods, results, and conclusion.

Authors should use international reporting guidelines according to study design, where applicable:

  • CONSORT for clinical trials
  • STROBE for observational studies
  • PRISMA for systematic reviews and meta-analyses
  • CARE for case reports
  • COREQ or SRQR for qualitative studies
  • CHEERS for health economic evaluations

The journal may request checklists or complementary documents when the study type requires them.

Manuscript format

The manuscript must be submitted as an editable file, preferably Microsoft Word. A readable font, adequate line spacing, and page numbering are recommended.

The main manuscript file must be anonymised for double-blind peer review. It must not include author names, affiliations, identifying acknowledgements, or information that would allow direct or indirect identification of authorship.

Tables and figures

Tables and figures must be numbered consecutively in order of appearance in the text. Each table or figure must have a title, explanatory legend, and source where applicable.

Images must be of sufficient quality for publication. Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions to reproduce previously published material.

References

The journal uses the Vancouver style. Citations must be numbered consecutively in order of appearance in the text.

References must be complete, verifiable, and relevant. Up-to-date scientific literature should be prioritised and, where available, DOI or URL should be included.

Research ethics

Research involving human participants must comply with the Declaration of Helsinki and have institutional ethics committee approval where required. Informed consent of participants must be stated explicitly.

Animal studies must comply with applicable national and international ethical regulations.

In case reports, case series, or clinical research, authors must protect patient confidentiality and avoid any data that would allow direct or indirect identification.

Authorship and contributions

All listed authors must have made a substantial intellectual contribution, participated in reviewing and approving the final version, and accept responsibility for the published content.

Honorary, guest, or gift authorship is not accepted. Contributions that do not meet authorship criteria should be acknowledged in the acknowledgements section.

The journal recommends using the CRediT taxonomy to declare each author’s specific contributions whenever possible.

Conflicts of interest

All authors must declare any financial, academic, institutional, personal, or professional conflict of interest that could influence the development, interpretation, or publication of the manuscript.

If there are no conflicts of interest, this must be stated explicitly: “The authors declare that they have no conflicts of interest.”

Funding

Authors must declare funding sources, institutional support, or sponsorship received for the study. If the work received no funding, state: “This study received no external funding.”

Data availability

Where applicable, authors should include a statement on the availability of the data used in the research. Deposit in open or institutional repositories is recommended, provided this does not breach ethical principles, confidentiality, or applicable regulations.

Use of artificial intelligence

Use of generative artificial intelligence tools must be declared explicitly in the manuscript, specifying the tool and its purpose. Such tools cannot be listed as authors.

Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and scientific validity of the content, even when AI tools were used to support writing, translation, analysis, or editing.

Editorial assessment

Manuscripts first undergo editorial screening for fit with the journal’s scope, compliance with standards, originality, and ethical requirements.

Manuscripts that pass this stage are sent for external double-blind peer review. Assessment considers originality, relevance, methodological quality, clarity of presentation, currency of references, and contribution to scientific knowledge.

The Editorial Board may accept the manuscript, request revisions, open a further review round, or reject it.

Continuous publication

The journal publishes three issues per year with continuous publication within each period (No. 1: January–April; No. 2: May–August; No. 3: September–December). Accepted articles are published online individually once the editorial process is complete—including peer review, copyediting, editing, and final typesetting—and are included in the issue whose period covers their publication date.

Open access and charges

The Revista UniNorte de Medicina y Ciencias de la Salud is an open-access journal. All articles are freely available to readers at no cost.

The journal charges no fees for submission, processing, or publication of articles (diamond open access; no APCs).

Author responsibility

Authors are responsible for the manuscript content, the accuracy of the data, proper citation of sources, compliance with ethical standards, and obtaining permissions for copyrighted material. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in return of the manuscript, rejection, or post-publication editorial actions.

Privacy

Personal-data handling is set out under About → Privacy Statement and is not repeated on this page.

Submission Preparation Checklist
