Abstract

Introduction: Gestational diabetes mellitus affects about 14% of pregnancies worldwide and increases the risk of hypertensive disorders, macrosomia and neonatal complications, as well as long-term maternal type 2 diabetes. In Paraguay, local information on the profile of affected pregnant women is scarce. The aim was to describe the clinical, anthropometric and treatment characteristics of women with gestational diabetes mellitus cared for at the District Hospital of San Juan Nepomuceno, Paraguay, during 2024. Materials and methods: Observational, descriptive and retrospective study based on review of clinical records of pregnant women with a diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus cared for at the facility during 2024. Age, body mass index, vital signs, treatment and mode of delivery were described using frequencies, without hypothesis testing. Results: Sixteen women were identified. Ten (62.5%) were aged 30–39 years and 14 (87.5%) had overweight or obesity. Half had normal blood pressure and the other half elevated blood pressure or hypertension. Ten (62.5%) received pharmacological treatment, mainly NPH insulin. Delivery was spontaneous vaginal in 8 cases (50.0%) and cesarean in 5 (31.3%); in 3 it was not recorded. Conclusions: Women with gestational diabetes mellitus cared for at this district hospital were mostly aged 30 years or older and had overweight or obesity, and management was predominantly pharmacological. The findings are descriptive, come from a single center and year and do not allow estimation of population frequency of the disease.
