Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease of rising prevalence whose complications, although preventable, account for a substantial share of hospital admissions for noncommunicable diseases. The aim was to determine the incidence of type 2 diabetes complications among adult inpatients at the Presidente Franco District Hospital during the second half of 2022.
Materials and methods: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional quantitative study. Review of medical records of patients with diabetes admitted to the hospital's Internal Medicine service during the study period.
Results: Fifty-nine patients were included. Most frequent age group: 70–79 years (31%); mean age 66.75 years. Residence: Presidente Franco 49%, Ciudad del Este 46%. Continuous treatment in 41%; none in 59%. At least one complication in 98%; most frequent were diabetic foot (43%) and heart disease (34%), followed by chronic kidney disease (11%) and diabetic retinopathy (4%). Concurrent hypertension in 44%; primary schooling predominated.
Conclusions: High incidence of complications, with diabetic foot and heart disease most frequent, amid low schooling, concurrent hypertension and majority without continuous treatment. Strengthening self-care education and continuous follow-up is supported.
