Abstract

Introduction: Multidrug-resistant microorganisms (MDRO) are a global public health problem, with a high burden of morbidity and mortality associated with healthcare-related infections. The aim was to assess knowledge of preventive measures against MDRO infections among nursing professionals at the Capiatá District Hospital.

Materials and methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional quantitative study using a closed-question survey of 22 nursing professionals in the Internal Medicine service.

Results: 73% correctly identified MDRO and 82% recognized carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae. All reported knowing preventive measures. Reported compliance was high (100% hand hygiene, gloves and gowns; 91% mask and patient isolation; 73% surface disinfection). 77% identified lack of resources as the main challenge.

Conclusions: There is adequate knowledge and high reported biosafety compliance, with gaps in surface disinfection and a structural limitation of resources, supporting continuing education and supply of protective equipment.
