Introduction: Self-care agency—the capacity of a person to continually assess health needs and engage in self-care activities to promote and maintain well-being—is a central component of Dorothea Orem's theory, with direct relevance to rehabilitation. The aim was to analyze self-care agency capacity among patients attending the Rehabilitation service of Universidad del Norte, Asunción, during 2023.
Materials and methods: Quantitative, non-experimental, field descriptive study. Sample of 38 patients. Appraisal of Self-Care Agency (ASA) scale, Colombian validated version (5 dimensions, 24 items).
Results: Mean age 42.9 years; female 55%; Paraguayan nationality 95%; single 63%; workers 37%; university education 55%. Global self-care agency: high 74%, medium 16%, low 11%. By dimensions: high in social interaction (74%), personal well-being (97%), activity and rest (68%) and promotion of functioning (100%); food consumption predominantly moderate (74%).
Conclusions: Self-care agency capacity was mostly high, followed by moderate, with relatively lower performance in food consumption within an overall favorable profile.
