Introduction: Candida albicans is part of the normal oral microbiota but may act as an opportunistic pathogen and cause oral candidiasis when microbial balance or local immunity is altered, a setting favored by surgical wounds and suture material after tooth extraction. The aim was to compare C. albicans adherence on silk and polyglactin sutures after tooth extraction in patients at Hospital General de Villa Elisa, Paraguay, during 2024.
Materials and methods: Observational, analytical, non-experimental quantitative study. Fifty-eight patients underwent extraction with suture (30 silk 3.0; 28 polyglactin 3.0). At 7 days, sutures from 30 patients (15 per group) were removed for Sabouraud culture.
Results: Of 30 analyzed, 30% male and 70% female; 37% aged 18–30 years and 63% aged 31–67. C. albicans growth: 11/15 silk (74%) versus 15 polyglactin 3/15 (20%).
Conclusions: Greater adherence on silk than on polyglactin, supporting preference for monofilament or lower plaque-retentive materials in extractions.
