Abstract

Introduction: Hospital cleaning staff play an essential role in infection prevention but often work under precarious conditions with limited institutional recognition. The aim was to assess occupational risk among cleaning staff at the Regional Hospital of Ciudad del Este during November–December 2024.

Materials and methods: Descriptive, non-experimental, cross-sectional quantitative study. Expert-validated sociodemographic questionnaire and occupational overload matrix, plus observation of PPE use, in the entire cleaning workforce (n=28).

Results: 100% female; median age 34 years (22–67); seniority 3–6 years in 64%. Physical risk: medium 86%, high 14%; shift work: medium 79%. Overall risk: low 57%, medium 43%, none high. No worker used complete PPE: 100% without leather gloves, steel-toe closed leather footwear or goggles; 54% without cap or face mask.

Conclusions: Overall risk was low-to-medium, but structural PPE gaps compromise safety and require corrective action.
