Abstract

Introduction: Tuberculosis is a preventable and curable infectious disease that remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality. The aim was to analyze the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of people with tuberculosis in the TB control program of the Regional Hospital of Ciudad del Este during 2024.

Materials and methods: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional quantitative study. Document review of complete PNCT records at the hospital (n = 218), with institutional authorization.

Results: Age 16–30 years 33.5%; mean 40 years (SD 18.6). Male 76%; residence in Ciudad del Este 80%. Smoking 38.9%; addictions 24.7%; diabetes 22.4%. Pulmonary TB 85.3%; extrapulmonary 14.7% (pleural 72%, meningeal 15%). New patients 79.4%. Outcomes: cured 12.8%; completed without final exam 35.3%; loss to follow-up 37.6%; deaths 10.6%.

Conclusions: TB mainly affects young adults and is associated with behavioral risks and comorbidities; high loss to follow-up limits treatment success below WHO targets.
