Abstract

Objective: To characterize parental stress and parenting attitudes in mothers of children aged 0 to 3 years.

Methods: Quantitative, descriptive, non-experimental, cross-sectional study with non-probability convenience sampling. Abidin's Parenting Stress Index (short form) and Gerard's Parent-Child Relationship Inventory (PCRI) were administered via an online form to Paraguayan mothers with children aged 0 to 3 years.

Results: Thirty-five mothers aged 21 to 39 years participated. At the item level, the highest agreement was recorded for statements related to perceived lack of time and distancing from the child (“I rarely have time to be with my child”, mean 3.46 out of 4) and to perceived lack of smiling or positive interaction from the child (“I feel that my child does not smile as much as other children”, mean 4.26 out of 5).

Conclusion: In this sample, mothers reported relevant levels of perceived lack of time and distancing in parenting, together with high scores on items related to dissatisfaction with parenthood. These descriptive findings provide an initial characterization of parental stress and parenting attitudes among Paraguayan mothers of children in early childhood.
