Abstract

La enfermedad de Alzheimer es la causa más común de demencia, ésta es una patología neurodegenerativa crónica e irreversible. Se ha establecido en estudios previos una relación entre la enfermedad de Alzheimer y las inflamaciones crónicas, pudiendo ser una de ellas la enfermedad periodontal, una inflamación crónica que afecta las encías y el hueso alveolar. El objetivo de esta revisión es determinar una relación causal entre la periodontitis y la enfermedad de Alzheimer. Se realizó una revisión sistemática en la que se evaluaron artículos de revisión y ensayos clínicos obtenidos de las bases de datos MEDLINE/PUBMED y Cochrane, que cumplieron con los criterios de inclusión. Los resultados indican que la periodontitis puede ser un factor que empeore el estado cognitivo o que pueda predisponer la aparición temprana de la enfermedad en pacientes susceptibles, sin embargo, son necesarios más estudios para confirmar una relación causal.
