Abstract

Objective: To describe and compare levels of positive and negative affect by sex and age group in a sample of Paraguayan adolescents.

Methods: Quantitative, descriptive-comparative, non-experimental, cross-sectional study. The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) was administered to 56 adolescents aged 14 to 18 years from an educational institution in the Central department of Paraguay.

Results: Positive affect was significantly higher in males than in females (mean 31.58 vs 25.31; p=0.003), whereas negative affect was significantly higher in females than in males (mean 28.97 vs 21.58; p=0.001). No significant differences in positive affect were found between the 14–16 and 17–18 year age groups (p=0.799).

Conclusion: In this sample of Paraguayan adolescents, significant sex differences were identified in positive and negative affect, with higher positive affect in males and higher negative affect in females, and no significant age-group differences in positive affect.
